Adecco is the result of the gradual merger of four of the world’s staffing industry giants.  Our history is colored in almost equal parts by the experiences of those who created each of these companies, so we will provide you with a short summary of the origins of all four:

  • Adia was founded by Henri Lavanchy in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1957.  The company expanded throughout Europe in the 1960s, and in 1972 established operations in the United States.  Soon after, Adia expanded coverage to Japan, Australia, and throughout Southeast Asia.
  • ECCO Staffing began as a small temporary staffing company, expanding from a single location.  Philippe Foriel-Destezet incorporated ECCO in Lyon, France in 1964.  By 1984, ECCO had become the largest staffing company in France, with a growing global presence, augmenting its European base of operations.
  • David J. McGrath Jr. Founded TAD Resources International in 1956.  Starting in Cambridge, Massachusetts, TAD expanded from a local operation, to become the world’s largest privately held staffing firm, with 350 locations.  Revenues for TAD in 1996 exceeded $1.2 Billion dollars, with 36,000 contract workers employed at any given time.
  • William Olsten opened the first Olsten Temporary Staffing office in New York City in 1950.  The company expanded throughout the U.S. and Canada in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.  By 1999, Olsten Staffing had become a cornerstone of the staffing world, with $5 billion in revenues and 1,400 offices in 14 countries.

The merger of Adia and Ecco was completed at the beginning of 1997, and resulted in the formation of the world’s largest staffing service.  The newly formed Adecco then moved to acquire TAD Resources International at the end of 1997.  This acquisition helped to round out our list of services by strengthening the technical side of our staffing expertise, making our goal of becoming a “full-service” staffing firm a reality.

In 2000, Adecco made its boldest move toward growth and geographical coverage yet by merging with Olsten Staffing of Melville, NY.  Olsten’s superior technical abilities and extensive branch network were the perfect addition to the existing Adecco organization.  There have been many smaller acquisitions along the way, and there will be more in the future, but these four companies are the pillars upon which Adecco stands.

Philosophy

Every company in every industry claims to be the best at what they do.  That’s how sales are made and how businesses compete.  But in reality there can be only one “best”, only one true leader.

Adecco was born out of the vision that we could create a true leader in the field of employment services.  A company that really was the biggest, the smartest, the fastest, and the most efficient.  So far, the results have surpassed all our expectations.  As we have grown and changed, our customers have benefited, and they have spread the word.  But we are not just about being “big” – at Adecco, what we really strive to do is to serve all of our customers, from the largest to the smallest.

Our belief is that because we are global, we can truly serve companies with global needs.  And we believe that the lessons we learn from serving these large companies, and the improvising we do to meet their needs, will directly benefit our smaller customers like no local company could ever do.

At its simplest level, our mission is to match companies that need workers with qualified people to perform the work.  In that process, we strive to provide work that is rewarding, and provides a sense of dignity and belonging to the employee.

The world of work will continue to change and Adecco will thrive at the center of it.  As we see it, our job is to monitor these changes, discover the new challenges they bring, and find solutions to those challenges for our customers.  We will always be there, brining our customers the workers they need when they need them, no matter what tomorrow brings.

Adecco Overview

Today, Adecco is the largest company in the personnel services industry in terms of consolidated revenues.  We have offices in over 4,500 locations in 60 countries.  Of course for our customers, being present in a market is just the beginning.  What’s more important is that Adecco is strong in the markets that matter most.  Right now, Adecco is the leader in eight of the thirteen largest world markets that make up over 90% of industry revenue.

Adecco backs up this strong market presence with considerable financial strength.  We have an exceptionally strong balance sheet and cash flow to support our growth efforts.

While many organizations talk about the importance of being global, Adecco is already truly global and multicultural in nature.  Our sixteen-member management team is made up of members representing nine different nationalities.  This diversity sets us far apart from our competition and gives us a unique perspective on the global economy.

We are well positioned to expand in one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
